Good carpet can be ruined by poor fitting. Here is how a mosque carpet should be installed, and what to check before you sign it off.
Mosque carpet installation is not like fitting carpet at home. The rows must run exactly parallel to the qibla wall, seams must disappear into the pattern, and the carpet has to stay flat under thousands of prostrations. Here is the process step by step.
1. Before the day
- Agree a date when the hall can be closed, usually one or two days for a typical mosque.
- Remove furniture, Qur'an stands and the old carpet, or agree who will do it.
- Let the new rolls rest in the hall for a day so they adjust to its temperature and humidity.
2. Floor preparation
The floor must be clean, dry and level. Bumps and holes show through the carpet over time, and any damp will cause odour later. Moisture problems should be fixed before anything is laid.
3. Underlay
On stone and concrete floors, underlay is laid first for comfort, insulation and a longer carpet life. Over underfloor heating, a thin, heat-conductive underlay or none at all is the better choice.
4. Setting out the qibla line
This is the most important step. The fitters mark a reference line parallel to the qibla wall and align the first row to it. Every other row follows from this line, so a small error here becomes a visible slant across a long hall.
5. Laying and seaming the rolls
Rolls are laid side by side with the pattern matched across each seam, so the row lines continue unbroken. Seams are joined with seaming tape or stitching and pressed flat.
6. Cutting around columns, the mihrab and the minbar
Cuts are made in place, following the column shape and the mihrab niche. Edges along walls are trimmed and finished so they don't fray.
7. Final check
- Are all row lines parallel to the qibla wall?
- Are seams invisible from standing height?
- Is the carpet flat, with no ripples or bubbles?
- Are edges trimmed cleanly at walls and doors?
The first weeks

How long does mosque carpet installation take?
A typical mosque takes one or two days. Large halls, many columns or custom cuts around the mihrab can add time.
Should mosque carpet be glued down?
Usually not. A carpet with a stable backing, laid over a suitable underlay and properly seamed, stays in place without adhesive and is easier to replace later.
Can local fitters install carpet made in Turkey?
Yes. Experienced fitters can install it following the layout drawing from the manufacturer. The key is aligning the first row precisely to the qibla.
