An accurate quote starts with an accurate measurement. Here is how to measure your prayer hall, count prayer rows and allow for waste before you ask for prices.
Mosque carpet is priced by area, so a small measuring mistake can change both your budget and the amount of carpet that gets produced. The manufacturer will confirm the final numbers during a site survey, but these steps are enough for a reliable first quote.
1. Measure the length and width
Measure the prayer hall parallel to the qibla wall (width) and perpendicular to it (depth). Measure wall to wall, in front of any skirting. A laser measure is far more accurate than a tape over long distances.
2. Split irregular rooms into rectangles
If the hall is L-shaped or has a women's gallery or alcoves, divide it into rectangles and measure each one separately. The total area is the sum of the rectangles.
- Main hall: 18 m × 14 m = 252 m² (about 2,713 sq ft)
- Side room: 6 m × 4 m = 24 m² (about 258 sq ft)
- Total: 276 m² (about 2,971 sq ft)
To convert, 1 m² equals 10.764 sq ft.
3. Mark columns, the mihrab and the minbar
Column positions and diameters, the depth of the mihrab niche and the footprint of the minbar all shape the cutting plan. Mark them on a simple sketch with their distance from the qibla wall. Photos of the hall help a great deal.
4. Work out the number of prayer rows
On row-aligned and mihrab-pattern carpets, each row is sized so a worshipper can prostrate comfortably. Dividing the hall's depth by the row depth gives an approximate row count. The manufacturer calculates the exact spacing from your measurements so the last row is never left half-width.
5. Allow for waste
Carpet is woven in rolls of a fixed width. If the hall's width doesn't divide evenly by the roll width, or there are many columns to cut around, some waste is unavoidable. Patterned carpets need a little more, because the row lines must match across every seam. Add a small margin to your estimate to avoid surprises.
6. Send your numbers to the manufacturer
With the total area, the sketch and a few photos, a manufacturer can price your project by material and design. For large mosques, a site survey before the final order is the safest route.
